What is Immersion Cooling Technology? How to Implement it in Your IT Deployment Strategy

With Immersion Cooling Technology, Immerse your server in a bath of non-conductive liquid and allow the thermal generated by the computer components to be transmitted to the fluid and cool using a one-stage or two-stage method.

Immersion cooling will become the standard in modern and future data centers as traditional cooling methods have higher costs in energy consumption, water use, real estate, carbon footprint, and more.

Immersion-cooled data centers are scalable, faster, deliver more savings for energy-efficient businesses, and are overall more reliable.

What is Immersion Cooling Technology?

Immersion Cooling Technology is also known as liquid submersion cooling, it is the practice of submerging computer components (or complete servers) in a thermally, but not electrically, conductive liquid (dielectric coolant).

Liquid submersion is a routine method of cooling large power distribution components such as transformers. Still rarely used for cooling IT hardware, this method is slowly becoming popular with innovative data centers around the world.

There is no need for fans to cool the IT hardware or servers in this way and the heat exchange between the hot coolant and cold water circuits are usually via a heat exchanger (ie the heater core or radiator). Some high-density supercomputers, such as the Cray-2 and Cray T90, use large liquid-to-cool liquid heat exchangers to remove heat.

Types of Immersion Cooling Technology

  1. Single-Phase Immersion Cooling
  2. Two-Phase Immersion Cooling (also known as evaporative cooling or flow boiling)

Single-Phase Immersion Cooling

Single Phase Immersion Cooling
Single-phase coolant never changes state, it never boils or freezes and always remains in liquid form. Coolant is pumped to a heat exchanger where the heat is transferred to the cooling water circuit. This technique uses an “open bath”, as there is little (or no) risk of the coolant evaporating.

Two-Phase Immersion Cooling (also known as evaporative cooling or flow boiling)

Two Phase Immersion Cooling (also Known As Evaporative Cooling Or Flow Boiling)

In two-stage cooling, the working fluid boils and thus exists in both a liquid and gas phase. The system takes advantage of a concept known as “latent heat” which is the heat (thermal energy) required to change the phase of a fluid.

The working fluid cools only by boiling and thus remains at the boiling point (“saturation temperature”). Energy is transferred from the heat source to the working fluid and this will cause a part of it to boil off into a gas.

The gas rises above the fluid pool where it contacts a condenser that is cooled to saturation temperature. This causes the fluid to condense back into the liquid and fall back into the pool (rain).

Plans of Immersion Cooling Technology

  • Scalable
  • Faster
  • Energy Efficient
  • More Savings
  • More Reliable

Liquid Immersion Cooling TechnologyFor Data Centers

Immersion Cooling Technology : Scalable

  1. The high density that guarantees deployment flexibility
  2. Immersion cooling allows for a much higher density of processing capabilities by removing active cooling components such as fans and heat sinks.
  3. A smaller “data center” can provide the same performance as a large-scale data center, which can be easily flexed in urban areas with a limited amount of space.

Best for:

  • 5G
  • Edge Computing
  • Enterprise Data Center
  • Laboratory

Immersion Cooling Technology : Faster

  1. High-temperature threshold that unlocks CPU overclocking potential
  2. Compared to conventional air cooling in which the operating temperature needs to be maintained below 35℃ for the CPU to function effectively at approximately 80% performance, immersion cooling allows the server to operate at 50℃, effectively Significantly removing 96% or higher CPU performance.

Best for:

  • AI
  • Machine Learning
  • Science Research
  • High Frequency Trading

Immersion Cooling Technology : Energy Efficient

  1. Better PUE which Means Better Sustainability
  2. Immersion cooling is clean, environmentally friendly. The circulation inside the tank happens naturally without consuming any extra energy, and thermal energy is transferred out of the liquid in one of two ways: through a heat exchanger, as is the case with “single-phase” immersion cooling; or through a cycle of vaporization and condensation, as is the case with “two-phase” immersion cooling.

Best for:

  • 5G / Edge Computing
  • Cloud / Enterprise DC
  • Lab / Science Research
  • AI / Machine Learning
  • High Frequency Trading
  • Crypto

Immersion Cooling Technology : More Savings

  1. Lower TCO ensures higher ROI
  2. Immersion cooling allows servers and computing components to be submerged in the dielectric liquid and dissipate thermals in a 50℃ operating environment, rendering data center air conditioning unnecessary.
  3. A passive cooling system means there are no redundant parts to manufacture or service, and the improved PUE also guarantees smaller electricity, hydroelectric and waste management bills.

Best for:

  • Enterprise Data Center
  • Blockchain
  • Crypto
  • High Frequency Trading

An improved PUE solution with Two-Phase Liquid Immersion Cooling

Immersion Cooling Technology : More Reliable

  1. Fanless Design Increases System Longevity and Stability
  2. Immersion cooling is self-circulating, which means the system requires less human operation ergo less human mistakes.
  3. The removal of traditional cooling components means hardware no longer suffers degradation from vibration, and the system are not subject to temperature variations therefore has a lower overall failure rate of the systems.

Best for:

  • Cloud
  • Edge Computing
  • Enterprise Servers

Solving the World’s Pressing Matter

What Is Immersion Cooling Technology How To Implement It In Your It Deployment Strategy

The world is witnessing more extreme weather patterns brought on by climate change. All countries have therefore been brought into the Paris Agreement to make ambitious efforts to combat climate change and adapt to its effects.

The main goal is to limit global warming to below 2, preferably 1.5 °C, compared to pre-industrial levels.

The main cause of “Immersion Cooling Technology” is 2% of the world’s electricity consumption is generated by data centers – as much as the entire aviation industry.

“Immersion Cooling Technology” will change the world and build future-proof green data centers.
